Gasoline Alley Farmers’ Market opening soon

Red Deer’s first indoor year-round farmers’ market will be opening to the public for a soft launch later this month.

The Gasoline Alley Farmers’ Market will open its doors on Saturday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 22 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with over 40 small businesses from central Alberta, and more on the way.

Located at the intersection of Lantern Street and Laura Avenue, officials say the 25,000 square foot building is the first purpose-built indoor farmers’ market the province has ever seen.

The team behind the market says it has focused on creating a family-friendly and comfortable space for the community.

Andrew Wiebe of the Gasoline Alley Farmers’ Market Society says, “The Gasoline Alley Farmers’ Market is going to be a wonderful place to spend a few hours over the weekend. It’s exciting to see so many local producers and vendors coming together to create a year-round destination where central Albertans can shop for Alberta-grown foods and Alberta-made goods even during the winter!”

As an Alberta approved farmers’ market, 80 per cent of all products for sale will be made, baked and grown in the province. There will also be a year-round event schedule including workshops, art classes and tours.

The north end of the building dubbed ‘The Market Kitchen’ consists of a number of small restaurants, a space for private functions and Red Deer’s newest brewery and taproom, Craft Beer Commonwealth, expected to open later this year.

“This is another way for local producers to share their products with those who live and work here. I hope this market becomes a fixture in Gasoline Alley for many, many years,” said Red Deer County Mayor Jim Wood.

Alberta Health Services COVID-19 protocols will be in place when the farmers’ market is open.
