Built in 1977

Rocky airport terminal may finally get an upgrade

Rocky Mountain House town council will be seeking input from stakeholders at an open house on what to do with the community’s aging airport terminal.

The Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County were approached by the airport commission with various options for how to improve the terminal that was built in 1977.

Two of the options were to not only update and repair the building, but also add additional offices and a classroom.

The classroom would be in the hopes of attracting a flying school, and the additional offices would be rented out.

Both options would cost around $2 million split evenly between the Town and County.

No town councillors felt that this was financially responsible.

Councillor Jason Alderson noted during council’s meeting on Tuesday that he felt only the basic needs of the airport should be met at this point.

Discussions council previously had with the users of the terminal revealed that complaints were not over size, but more about the age of the facility, leaks and the need for an upgraded washroom.

The final option for consideration, which council favoured, was to only upgrade what was deemed necessary, including a manager’s office, pilot’s lounge, public washroom and a main area to house roughly 70 people for various events.

Councillor Merrin Fraser noted that, “Getting a perspective from people actually using that space would be good.”

Council decided they would hold an open house at the Lou Soppit Community Centre and get input directly from stakeholders.

Administration reassured council that letters would be sent to all leaseholders, the Rocky Flying Club and the air show society.

The Town will also be notifying Clearwater County to coordinate for the future open house.
