Red Deer nearing ‘watch’ status as Alberta adds record number of COVID-19 cases

Red Deer is on the verge of being placed under a provincial COVID-19 Watch after another increase in active cases in the city.

The latest numbers from the province show Red Deer with 46 active as of Friday, a new record for the city and an increase of eight from Thursday’s total of 38.

Red Deer has had 150 recoveries from COVID-19 as the total number of cases attributed to the city has reached 196.

Alberta Health issues a COVID-19 Watch when a region reaches at least 10 active cases and more than 50 active cases per 100,000.

Red Deer County has eight active cases as of Friday, a decrease of one, and Sylvan Lake remains with one. Rocky Mountain House has added another active case and now has six.

Ponoka County remains under a COVID-19 Watch with 45 active cases of Friday.

Lacombe County remains with five active cases while the city of Lacombe held steady with two.

Mountain View County has two active cases, Olds has one and Kneehill County has nine.

The Central Zone has 178 as of Friday, an increase of 16.

Meantime, Alberta confirmed a record 622 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday out of 12,938 tests completed in the past 24 hours.

The total number of COVID-19 cases across the province 27,664. There are 5,172 active cases, up 251 from Thursday, and 22,169 recovered cases, up 366.

Ten more Albertans are in hospital due to COVID-19 since Thursday and the ICU count has risen by seven.

There are currently 140 Albertans in hospital because of the virus, including 25 in intensive care.

The province has recorded another five deaths from the virus to bring the total to 323.
