Preliminary inquiry dates set for man charged in Walmart shooting death

Oct 30, 2020 | 12:44 PM

A preliminary inquiry has been scheduled for a man charged in a fatal shooting outside a local Walmart last December.

Five days from July 12-16, 2021 have been set aside to determine whether there’s enough evidence for Chase Freed’s case to go to trial.

The preliminary inquiry dates were set Friday in Red Deer provincial court.

According to Crown officials, however, resolution discussions are still ongoing, but if resolution is not reached, the matter will proceed on the scheduled preliminary hearing dates.

Freed, who is 19, faces one count of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, failing to stop while being pursued by a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and theft of a motor vehicle in the Dec. 20, 2019 incident.

That’s when RCMP responded to the south Walmart in Red Deer where 69-year-old C.J. “Jim” Williams had suffered a gunshot wound in the parking lot after being confronted by a masked man with a gun in what police believe was intended to be a robbery.

Williams was rushed to Red Deer Regional Hospital where he later passed away from his injuries.

Mounties say their investigation determined the suspect then fired two additional shots at two other people while fleeing the scene in a stolen vehicle being driven by a woman.

The alleged driver, 30-year-old Crystal Lee Maurice, is also scheduled for a preliminary inquiry, from May 12-13, 2021.

Maurice is charged with accessory after the fact to murder, failing to stop while being pursued by a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and theft of a motor vehicle.
