Grant funding available

Brazeau County creating Mountain Pine Beetle Program

Oct 23, 2020 | 12:45 PM

Brazeau County has approved the creation of a Mountain Pine Beetle Program.

The program is dependent on whether provincial grant funding is approved, which the county has applied for.

The county’s grant proposal includes funds to hire contractors to perform ground surveys and treatment of infested trees. The proposed project would commence in early 2021 with work to be completed by June 30, 2021.

The grant is fully funded by the province and the county says matching dollars are not required by the municipality.

Brazeau County administration says they have received an increased number of reports of Mountain Pine Beetle within Brazeau County’s border in 2020, as well as contact from various stakeholders interested in the municipality participating in the grant program.

In preparation, Administration has drafted an application in order to meet the October 31 submission deadline. Brazeau County Council has approved the application.

The Government of Canada recently announced $60 million in funding for Alberta over the next three years to support ongoing work in fighting the invasive species.

Earlier this month, the Alberta government said more than 147,000 trees killed by mountain pine beetles were detected by aerial surveys this year, over an area spanning almost eight million hectares. The province says that the number is down significantly from the more than 244,000 trees detected last year.
