Dozens arrested last month in Red Deer RCMP investigations

September was a busy month for the Red Deer RCMP’s Downtown Patrol Unit (DPU), as they responded to 66 calls for service and conducted an additional 49 proactive policing investigations resulting in 58 people arrested and 102 Criminal Code charges laid.

Mounties say two notable files involved traffic stops that resulted in important seizures of dangerous weapons and a number of charges.

On Sept. 3, DTU members stopped an unregistered motor vehicle. During the stop, the officer observed a weapon. Upon further investigation, three loaded firearms, ammunition and stolen mail were located inside the vehicle.

Brandon Loughlin, 23, of Stettler, faces 25 charges including:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon (x2)
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x3)
  • Careless use of a firearm (x3)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (x3)
  • Possession of break-in instrument
  • Possession of property obtained by crime (x6)
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Unauthorized possession of firearm in a motor vehicle (x3)
  • Failure to comply with probation order

Loughlin is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 4.

A second large seizure occurred on Sept. 8, involving another traffic stop by DTU members on bike patrol. During the stop, police say the investigation revealed that the licence plate was associated with a stolen vehicle reported a few days previous. Inside the vehicle, officers located a loaded firearm.

Jay Dee Coffman, 36, of Red Deer, faces 12 charges, including:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a firearm while prohibited (x2)
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition (x2)
  • Failure to comply with release conditions (x5)
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Coffman is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 22
  • RCMP say the passenger, Kyle McGray, 31, of Red Deer, faces seven charges, including:
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Unauthorized possession of firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a controlled substance

Mounties add, McGray failed to appear at his October court date, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued.

Throughout the month of September, the DPU is said to have seized 22 weapons, including four firearms, executed 152 arrest warrants consisting of 244 charges, and issued 49 violation tickets.
