Suspect in Bluffton gas station shooting arrested

The suspect wanted for a shooting last week at gas station in Bluffton has been arrested.

Police were called at about 6:20 a.m. on Oct. 16 to the Bluffton City General Store, located in the hamlet about 100 kilometres northwest of Red Deer.

After a male suspect failed to pay for his gas and groceries, police say the store clerk confronted him outside and was struck by a shot from a small-calibre firearm. The store clerk was taken to hospital and treated for a non-life threatening injury.

RCMP said the suspect fled southbound in a vehicle described as a smaller grey or silver-coloured sedan with a sunroof with a female passenger inside. The car was recovered south of Edmonton on Oct. 19.

At around 10:15 a.m. on October 20, Wetaskiwin/Camrose RCMP learned that the suspect was near Ohaton, east of Camrose, in a truck stolen from Vegreville. After the truck broke down and the suspect fled on foot, several RCMP resources were deployed to contain the area he was in, eventually locating him in an outbuilding on a farm property. A high risk arrest was conducted and he was taken into custody.

Brian Daniel Spence, 28, is facing six criminal charges including aggravated assault and robbery.

At the time of his arrest, Spence was wanted as well on an arrest warrant issued for Killam Detachment.

Meantime, no charges have been laid against the 30-year-old female passenger associated to the robbery as RCMP say they are investigating the possibility that she may have been threatened and coerced into taking part.
