Red Deer drops two active COVID-19 cases

For the first time in over two weeks the number of active cases of COVID-19 in Red Deer has gone down.

Wednesday’s updated stats from the province show our city with 37 active cases, a decrease of two from Tuesday’s record total of 39.

119 Red Deerians have now recovered from the virus. The total number of cases in the city stands at 156, two more than Tuesday.

Red Deer County sits with eight active cases as of Wednesday, Sylvan Lake remains with none. Lacombe County remains with 10 active cases while the city of Lacombe has six. The County of Stettler has seven active cases while Mountain View County and the town of Olds both have four.

Ponoka County now has 40 active cases, a decrease of three from Tuesday, and remains under a provincial COVID-19 Watch with a rate of 145.6 cases per 100,000 people.

Across the Central Zone there are 140 active cases as of Wednesday and two people are in hospital.

Alberta Health reported 406 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. It’s the first time more than 400 cases have been reported in one day.

The total number of cases across the province is 23,402 and there are currently 3,372 active cases.

Alberta’s lab completed 14,904 tests for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

There are 113 Albertans in hospital, including 16 in ICU. There were also three deaths reported today, bringing the total to 296. None of the deaths were in the Central Zone, which has seen eight fatalities related to COVID-19.

When it comes to schools in Red Deer, a COVID-19 watch (school outbreak declared with 5 or more cases where disease could have been acquired or transmitted in the school) remains in effect for Hunting Hills High School where five cases have been confirmed. École Secondaire Notre Dame High School reported its first case last week. West Park Elementary School reported its first case on Friday, as did Westpark Middle School and Annie L. Gaetz Elementary on Saturday. Central Middle School reported its first case on Monday.

Red Deer College announced Monday that two cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed among members of its community.
