Red Deer now with 39 active COVID-19 cases

Red Deer now has 39 active cases of COVID-19, according to Monday’s updated online statistics from Alberta Health.

That’s an increase of four from the last report on Friday. The number of recoveries in Red Deer rose by two during that time for a total of 113.

The total number of cases in our city now stands at 152.

There are 898 new cases of COVID-19 in Alberta from over the weekend, including 311 cases confirmed on Friday (Oct. 16), 231 on Saturday and 356 on Sunday. The province conducted 58,183 tests in the past 72 hours – 16,021 on Oct. 16, 12,556 on Oct. 17 and 13,578 on Oct. 18.

The total number of COVID-19 cases across the province stands at 22,673. There are 3,138 active cases, up 302 from Friday, and 19,243 recovered cases, up 592.

There are currently 117 Albertans in hospital, 18 in ICU. There have been 292 deaths province-wide, an increase of four from Friday.

The Central Zone now has 148 active cases and has recorded an additional death, a man in his 20s from Maskwacis, bringing the total to eight. The death reported on Oct. 15 is the first in the zone since August 3.

Red Deer County has seven active cases as of Monday, up from five as of Friday, while Sylvan Lake remains with two.

Lacombe County added an active case and now has 10, while the city of Lacombe shed an active case and is down to nine. The County of Stettler has eight active cases, Mountain View County has nine and the town of Olds has four.

The number of active cases in Ponoka County has reached 46, an increase of seven from Friday, and the area remains under a provincial COVID-19 watch. The majority of the county’s active cases are in Maskwacis, where schools remain closed for a second straight week in a bid to prevent further spread of the virus. There are currently no active cases at any of the 11 schools within the Maskwacis Education Schools Commission.

As for schools in Red Deer, a COVID-19 watch (school outbreak declared with 5 or more cases where disease could have been acquired or transmitted in the school) remains in effect for Hunting Hills High School where five cases have been confirmed. École Secondaire Notre Dame High School reported its first case last week. West Park Elementary School reported its first case on Friday, as did Westpark Middle School and Annie L. Gaetz Elementary on Saturday. Central Middle School reported its first case on Monday.

Red Deer College announced Monday that two cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed among members of its community.
