A 23-year-old man wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant was taken into custody this week after being found asleep at the wheel of a stolen truck.

Ponoka RCMP say it was just after 9 p.m. on Oct. 10 when members were dispatched to investigate a truck, supposedly stolen, on Range Road 254 in Lacombe County.

The complainant who spotted the truck said they had made efforts to follow the truck until the driver of said truck attempted to ram the complainant’s vehicle. Patrols were made to located the truck, and at around 10:15 an update to police noted the truck was spotted at the Morningside Community Hall.

A member located it with a sleeping male inside. It was determined then that the truck was indeed stolen, and then the male was arrested without incident.

A search of the truck led to the seizure of a large tool box containing numerous items including pro bars, crow bars, drills and grinders, all items, police note, typically associated with break-ins. Also seized was a crossbow.

“In consultation with our community, the Ponoka RCMP has committed to tackling the issue of stolen vehicles and the subsequent crimes which are perpetrated by the criminals driving them,” says Staff Sergeant Chris Smiley, Detachment Commander, Ponoka RCMP. “We offer thanks to the citizens who alerted us to this vehicle, and remind the community to not engage with unknown, suspicious people. Let the RCMP manage the potential dangers.”

Bryan Lawrence Moffitt, who was arrested, already had four different court orders prohibiting him from being in possession of a crossbow.

He faces nine criminal code charges and two provincial charges under the Traffic Safety Act in relation to this incident. Charges include possession of stolen property, possession of break in instruments and dangerous driving. He has been remanded and is scheduled to attend court in Ponoka on Oct. 30.
