A seven-day hearing is underway in Red Deer provincial court as specialized Crown prosecutors from Calgary seek long-term offender status for a central Alberta man who admitted to committing child porn-related offences.

The 36-year-old man, whose name is under a publication ban, pled guilty last October to 27 charges, while 53 others were dropped.

Court previously heard that over the course of about a decade, the man collected hundreds of photos and videos of himself sexually assaulting or molesting children between the ages of two and 10-years-old. Some of the images were uploaded to child pornography sites.

Crown prosecutor Carolyn Ayre told Judge Jim Hunter on Tuesday that she is seeking a 20-year global sentence for the accused, followed by 10 years of community supervision.

Ayre is also requesting submission of the man’s DNA, that he be registered as a lifetime sex offender, be given a lifetime weapons prohibition, have no contact with his victims, no access to electronics with internet access, and be banned for life from attending public places where persons under the age of 16 may be present.

Defense lawyer Kelsey Sitar indicated her focus will be the man’s treatability.

The Crown expects to call six witnesses to the stand over the course of the hearing, including psychologists, psychiatrists and witnesses from Correctional Services Canada.

The long-term offender status hearing concludes Oct. 23 when it’s expected a sentencing date will be set.
