Weapons complaint leads to arrest of Red Deer pair for breaching conditions

A man and woman have been charged after a weapons complaint led to a large police presence in downtown Red Deer this week.

It was shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 6) when Red Deer RCMP responded to an “unknown situation” involving a possible firearm at a downtown residential building along 55 Street.

Red Deer RCMP contained the scene and upon further investigation determined that the individual inside the residence was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Due to information suggesting that the suspect was armed with a weapon, Red Deer RCMP requested the assistance of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the Police Dog Service (PDS).

Upon their arrival, ERT served a warrant, and shortly thereafter took one male and one female into custody without incident.

Quentin Strawberry, 39, of O’Chiese First Nation and Jennifer Caswell, 38, of Red Deer were arrested for breaching no-contact conditions.

Strawberry is charged with failure to comply and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Oct. 9. Caswell is charged with breach of probation and is scheduled to appear on Nov. 10.

The pair are known to each other and were charged with second-degree murder in the March 2019 death of Joseph Gallant at a home in Grandview.

Caswell saw her murder charge withdrawn by the Crown last month and she was sentenced to time served on a count of assault causing bodily harm.

Strawberry, meantime, will stand trial for the matter in March.
