Blackfalds man claims lotto winnings a year later

A year after purchasing his ticket, a Blackfalds man is $250,000 richer thanks to playing the EXTRA on his Lotto 6/49 ticket.

Stuart Purvis matched all seven EXTRA numbers on his ticket for the September 11, 2019 draw.

He told the Western Canada Lottery Corporation that he’s “usually not very good” at checking his tickets, as is evident. He bought his ticket from the Esso in Blackfalds and it sat with other unchecked tickets for a few months.

When he was out of the country earlier this year for work, he then found himself stuck outside Canada due to COVID-19. When he returned home in August, he checked his ticket at the same place he bought it.

“I was just shocked. At first I thought it was $2,500, and then I checked again… and had to grab my glasses to count the zeroes,” he says, sharing that he checked the ticket at another location, and then again at the Esso just to be sure.

“I just still couldn’t believe it.”

Purvis formally made his prize claim on Sept. 10, one day short of a year. WCLC policy stipulates winners must cash in within one year of purchase, but it had previously extended the claim period by six months for tickets bought between March 17 and September 17 of last year.

Purvis said he plans to invest the money.
