Habitat for Humanity purchases second home from Town of Rocky Mountain House

The Town of Rocky Mountain House has approved the sale of a second home to Habitat for Humanity following a unanimous vote by town council on Tuesday.

The nonprofit organization had approached the Town to purchase the vacant unit located in Creekside, so that a family can move into their first home with a mortgage.

In 2011, Rocky built three homes in Creekside with the help from the Alberta Affordable Housing Grant for the final cost of $66,000 per home.

Clearwater Regional Family & Community Support has managed the units with assistance from the Town’s Maintenance department for any repairs and upkeep.

On average it costs the Town around $11,000 a year to operate and maintain the homes above the rental revenue.

One of the three homes was purchased last year by Habitat for Humanity for $33,000, which council agreed was a fair price to sell the second home for as well.

Councillor Merrin Fraser noted that, “Habitat as a nonprofit has the ability to leverage various grants, and to get in touch with people who really need the program since they are better suited to administer it.”

Councillor Jason Alderson said he doesn’t believe the town should be in the process of home ownership or business ownership.

There is interest from the nonprofit organization to purchase the third home as well, but a tenant is currently residing in the house until August of 2021.
