The Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Services have begun this year’s Fire Prevention Week from October 4-10 with the theme being to “Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.”

CRFRS released a video on Facebook giving a tour of their headquarters and an introduction into what to expect from this year’s Fire Prevention Week.

Regional Fire Chief Steve Debienne explains in the video that with Thanksgiving just around the corner, the leading cause of fires in the kitchen is from unattended cooking.

Debienne states in the video that according to the National Fire Protection Association cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the U.S.

On Monday, CRFRS held its first station tour at Station 10 in Leslieville in which they provided a station tour along with a demonstration on the dangers of deep frying a turkey.

The team recorded an earlier training session where a turkey was dropped into a deep fryer remotely and had shot flames high enough to fully engulf the dummy that was situated nearby.

To be safe this thanksgiving their tips are to set up 10 feet from any building or trees, set up on dirt, rocks or concrete, thoroughly thaw your turkey and let it dry, finally, measure your oil to ensure you don’t overflow the pot.

CRFRS will host a series of online events on Facebook Live giving a presentation and tour which started with Leslieville Station on Monday, Condor is on Tuesday at 7 PM, Caroline on Tuesday at 8 PM, Nordegg on Wednesday at 7 PM, and then finally Rocky on Thursday at 7 PM.
