Following two critical incidents in early September near Drayton Valley Christian School, the Town of Drayton Valley says it is working with RCMP and the Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) on a long term plan to mitigate the potential for future incidents in the area.

The two critical incidents happened on September 3 and September 8 in close proximity to the school, the latter of which involved a man being shot in the chest.

In a press release, the Town says the situation is “very alarming” and the community has been left shaken.

As part of an immediate and short term solution, the Town’s Community Peace Officer (CPO) and the RCMP have been making daily foot patrols in the area surrounding the school at various times throughout the day in an effort to keep children, school staff, and the public safe.

The Town says the next step is to have a portion of the treed land behind the school deforested to help improve sightlines in the area. An arborist has been contacted and the project should be completed in the next few weeks. In the meantime, the CPO and RCMP will continue making foot patrols in the area.

Additionally, the Town says they will be looking at more lighting in the area which will be considered as part of the 2021 budget. They will also be looking at options to develop the land which may discourage unwanted activity in the future.

According to the press release, the Town, RCMP, and WRSD have been working together and will remain vigilant for the safety of the community.
