Two central Alberta men are facing charges after RCMP seized a prohibited baton and break-in instruments from a stolen vehicle in Ponoka last week.

On Oct. 1, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Ponoka RCMP members located a stolen vehicle parked at a fuel station in the area of 5302 Highway 2A in Ponoka.

Further investigation indicated the vehicle had been stolen at approximately 1:45 p.m., out of Sylvan Lake.

Mounties say the vehicle was stopped and the occupants told they were under arrest. Two passengers fled from the vehicle and an officer pursued on foot.

The driver is accused of trying to start the stolen vehicle ignition with a screwdriver. As a result, an altercation occurred wherein the driver is alleged to have resisted arrest and was then taken into custody.

Additional police resources, along with an RCMP Police Service Dog (PSD) were deployed. The RCMP PSD was able to locate one of the males who matched surveillance footage from the fuel station.

The second male was arrested and taken into custody. The third male was not located and his identify remains unknown at this time.

Kenton James Wood, 27, of Ponoka and Peter George Walker, 35, of Innisfail are jointly charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public, and possession of break-in instruments.

Kenton Wood is also charged with resisting arrest, two counts of fail to comply with conditions, and charges of driving while unauthorized and driving an uninsured motor vehicle under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA).

Peter Walker is also charged with resisting arrest and three counts of fail to comply with conditions.

Following judicial hearings, both Wood and Walker were remanded into custody and are scheduled to attend Ponoka Provincial Court on Oct. 16.

Ponoka RCMP are asking the public’s assistance for any information in relation to this incident, specifically identifying the third male.
