Full transit service starts Sunday

This Sunday, October 4 is the day Red Deer’s new transit system will shift to full service capacity.

“The new system’s full service does not just mirror what the old system looked like before reducing services for COVID-19. The new network actually enables us within existing resources to increase frequency, hours and schedules on key routes to ensure we provide the service our riders need to move about our whole community,” said George Penny, Transit Manager. “The new routes offer more evenly distributed services throughout the city with longer run times on some of our core routes.”

Some of the changes riders will see starting Sunday include:

– 15-minute service on the Gaetz Avenue Rapid Bus at peak times on weekdays

– Earlier morning and later evening service, including early morning service on key Rapid Bus, Core and Commuter routes that starts at 5 a.m. to ensure that Red Deerians across the City can connect to jobs.

– 30-minute service restored on most routes and times Monday to Saturday PLUS targeted reinstatement of 30-minute service on Sundays and Holidays on higher ridership routes and times.

Officials say one of the changes that may take some getting used to for riders is that the Rapid Bus and Core routes (including Route 12 Gasoline Alley) all extend to 9 p.m. on Sunday while other routes still stop earlier at 6 or 7 p.m.

“The new service schedule enables the higher ridership Rapid and Core routes to run later on Sunday evenings, to offer new options for residents when it’s not yet feasible to extend all neighbourhood routes,” said Penny. “We encourage our transit customers to contact us if they need help planning their commute, we recognize that the new system does look different but we believe it will help riders navigate throughout the city in a more direct, timely manner.”
