Stoney Nakoda Nation unveils new name for mountain peak near Canmore
CANMORE, AB – Stoney Nakoda women elders have revealed their new name for a prominent landmark in the Alberta Rockies with a racist and misogynistic nickname.
The offensive name for the feature on Mount Charles Stewart combines a derogatory term for an Indigenous woman and slang for a woman’s breast.
A ceremony was held yesterday near the town of Canmore to bring back the peak’s original Indigenous name: Bald Eagle Peak in English.
Elders say the landmark was long overdue for a name change.
