Red Deer Mountie injured in traffic stop altercation

Sep 28, 2020 | 2:25 PM

Red Deer RCMP says one of its members was injured during an incident stemming from a traffic stop in the city’s north end nearly two weeks ago.

It was at about 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 when a member of Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services conducted the traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of 68 Street and Taylor Drive.

According to a media release, the traffic stop led to an impaired driving investigation and the application of a roadside screening test. Police say the driver refused, and attempted to flee. The RCMP officer attempted to stop the suspect and an altercation occurred before the suspect fled in their vehicle.

After additional RCMP officers were sent out, the suspect car was located a short time later and the individual was taken into custody.

Moses Danto, 25, of Calgary is charged with:

• Assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm

• Disarming a peace officer

• Dangerous operation of a vehicle

• Refusal to comply with a demand

• Flight from peace officer

• Possession of an identity document

• Failure to comply with conditions (x3)

• Failure to attend court

Following a judicial hearing, Danto was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer provincial court this Friday, Oct. 2.

Red Deer RCMP are thanking the members of the public who came to the aide of the officer, who sustained minor injuries and received treatment in hospital. The suspect did not require medical treatment.
