Red Deer backs AUMA resolution asking for help with financial sustainability

The City of Red Deer seconded one resolution at this year’s annual conference of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA).

The resolution put forward by The City of Edmonton, which was adopted, demands a new financial framework that would better serve municipalities.

It directs the AUMA to work with the Government of Alberta to reshape municipal finance for a new time, and to prove municipalities with reasonable measures and tools to sustainably meet their operating and capital budget needs.

“The role of local government has evolved significantly over the last number of decades with municipalities being essential partners on a range of priorities and issues that historically have not been part of municipal core service,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “At a local level, municipalities across the province lack long-term, stable, predictable and appropriate funding that fully enables us to grow and build communities that are fiscally resilient in the new normal.”

The proposed resolution acknowledges the need to relook at fiscal tools at the disposal of municipalities during a time when COVID-19 and the collapse of energy prices are causing great financial strain across the province.

This resolution is about a exploring a new fiscal relationship with the province that would establish a sustainable and predictable funding model for municipalities,” added Veer. “This is essential as we work locally to support economic growth, infrastructure and essential programs and services in our communities.”

The City of Red Deer did not put forth any of its own resolutions during this year’s AUMA convention, which was held virtually over Sept. 24-25.
