Victim details scary incident near Central Middle School

Sep 26, 2020 | 11:00 AM

A woman involved in a brazen incident last week near Central Middle School is speaking out about what happened.

In a letter to parents last Thursday, Sept. 17, Principal Darrin DeMale outlined that a day earlier a male allegedly approached a parent’s vehicle while parked in the vicinity of the school.

Kayla Greene, who was with her mother along 53 Street when the incident transpired, says the description shared by the school only begins to tell the story.

“My mom and I were moving stuff from the backseat of our van to the trunk because we were picking up my little sister. We just got the seat cleared and some guy comes up and he starts to get into our van, saying, ‘I’ll go for a ride.’ My mom had to grab him by the back of his hoodie and pull him out of our van,” Greene recounts.

“She was telling me to get into the van and then he tried to get into the front door. My mom had to push him away again. Of course during all of this she was screaming at him to get the eff away. When I finally get in, he pushes my mom up against the van and starts to grab at her hips. That’s when she pushed harder and said you need to get the away from us.”

Greene says the man did not appear to be homeless, nor was he impaired by alcohol. She does believe he was impaired by other drugs, though.

“As I was talking to RCMP, he started talking to another little girl, maybe 11 or 12-years-old, half a block away,” Greene remembers. “She went all the way around him and got into presumably her parents’ vehicle.”

Greene provided a description to police while looking at the man as he walked away, though when RCMP said last Friday (Sept. 18) they were still seeking a suspect, they did not provide a description.

She also attempted to speak with school authorities, but had little success in explaining the entire ordeal, she says.

Greene says the man was in his late 20s, had sandy blond hair to just below his ears, and wore a dark grey hat backwards, with a grey hoodie, black track pants and white sneakers. She noted the thinness of his face and hollow cheeks. There were no distinguishable logos on his clothing.

“When I was at Central, we didn’t really have any issues, but watching this happen and seeing the school’s response has been frustrating. With what the school put out, it’s not telling parents how serious the incident was,” she says. “My sister goes to Central now, so I want to make sure she’s safe.”

On Friday (Sept. 25), an RCMP spokesperson gave rdnewsNOW an update, saying they believe it was an isolated incident, and did do a patrol for a suspect, but did not find anyone. RCMP had deemed there wasn’t a risk to public safety.
