Red Deer RCMP stop two drivers travelling at excessive speeds

Red Deer RCMP’s efforts in targeting speeders and those racing on city streets has resulted in penalties for a pair of drivers clocked at 50 and 80 km/h over the posted speed limits last weekend.

On Sept. 19, Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services were conducting speed enforcement via stationary laser along 19 Street.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., police noted two vehicles that appeared to be racing one another near the Westerner Park entrance.

An officer clocked one of the vehicles travelling 120 km/h in the posted 70 km/h zone, while the second vehicle was determined to be travelling at 151 km/h.

Mounties say the drivers of both vehicles were stopped and charged. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a $495 ticket and charged for engaging in a race.

In addition to being charged for racing, the 19-year-old male driver of the second vehicle was also given a court summons.

Drivers speeding at more than 50 km/h are subject to a mandatory court appearance where a judge can impose penalties such as a fine or license suspension.

“Citizens travelling at such extreme speeds pose a serious and concerning risk to the public,” says Sergeant Michael Zufferli with the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit, in a press release. “Our focus is to deter these behaviours through enforcement and education.”
