A suspected car thief and his buddy picked a bad place and time to take a nap last week.

An Alberta RCMP Traffic member was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 11 west of Rocky Mountain House last Thursday afternoon when they came across a vehicle parked on the side of the road with the driver’s side rear door open with a pair of legs dangling out.

The officer stopped out of concern for the person’s safety, and to investigate the fact that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Edmonton three days earlier.

The officer took the keys to the vehicle while the occupants remained asleep, RCMP say in a release. The driver and passenger were then arrested and taken into custody.

The driver, a 25-year-old male from central Alberta, was charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000 as further investigation showed the licence plate had been stolen from a different vehicle.

The passenger, a 24-year-old male from central Alberta, was also charged and with Possession of stolen property over $5,000 and Possession of stolen property under $5,000. Police say he also had seven outstanding arrest warrants for unrelated offences and was held in custody for a judicial interim release hearing at a later date.
