A Sylvan Lake woman who admitted to stealing over half a million dollars from her employer will spend the next couple of years behind bars.

Laurie May Watts, 56, pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 after originally being charged with a total of 41 counts, most of which were withdrawn by the Crown last December.

On Sept. 16 in Rimbey provincial court, Watts was sentenced to two years in prison followed by one year of probation.

What police called a “lengthy investigation” started in July 2019 after Rimbey RCMP was called by a local business believing one of their employees was taking cash from a business account.
