Ponoka council terminates Town CAO, appoints interim CAO

Ponoka Town Council has voted to make a leadership change for the Town’s administration.

During a special meeting held on Tuesday, council voted unanimously to terminate the employment of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Albert Flootman without cause, effective immediately. Council also approved a second motion appointing Sandra Lund, the Town’s General Manager of Corporate Services, as the Town’s new Interim CAO.

“Council decided that it’s time for the Town to move in a new corporate direction,” said Ponoka Mayor Rick Bonnett, in a press release. “We sincerely thank Mr. Flootman for his four and half years of service to this community.”

Town officials say Flootman accepted council’s decision to move in a new direction.

“It’s been a privilege and an honour to serve the Town in this capacity over the last four and a half years,” said Flootman. “I’m very proud of the successes the Town’s administrative team has achieved in that time. I wish the Town and the community continued success into the future.”

The search for a new CAO, however, is not expected to be considered until a new mayor and council is elected in the fall of 2021.

“Council believes Sandra Lund is the right fit as our new Interim CAO,” added Mayor Bonnett. “We have a very capable Town administrative team and council is fully confident in Ms. Lund’s ability to lead that team.”

Lund said she is honoured to accept the new role and looks forward to serving the community in the year ahead as the Interim CAO.

“In the meantime, it’s business as usual,” remarked Bonnett, noting all current projects and Town operations are continuing without interruption.

He stated that council plans to outline details of its new corporate direction in the near future as it enters the final year of its current four-year term.
