New routes were launched at reduced service level

Full Red Deer Transit service rolling out Oct. 4

City officials say October 4 will be the day Red Deer’s new transit system will shift to full service capacity.

It was back on August 23 when Red Deer Transit launched its new routes and schedules at a reduced level of service in response to COVID-19.

“We have been eagerly anticipating ramping up to full service; because of the improved efficiencies of the new route network, the system is now able to deliver enhanced service,” said George Penny, Transit Manager. “The new system’s full service does not mirror the levels we had before reducing services for COVID 19, we’ll actually be increasing frequency, hours and schedules on the new network to ensure we provide the service required by our riders to move about our community.”

The October 4 implementation includes:

– 15-minute service on the Gaetz Avenue Rapid Bus at peak times on weekdays;

– Earlier morning and later evening service, including early morning service on key Rapid Bus, Core and Commuter routes that starts at 5 a.m.

– 30-minute service restored on most routes and times Monday to Saturday PLUS targeted reinstatement of 30-minute service on Sundays and Holidays on higher ridership routes and times.

Officials say the new routes and schedules were developed following community engagement and that changes continue to be made including adjustments to Routes 2 (Crosstown), 4 (Glendale-Southeast), 19 (Edgar Industrial) and schedule adjustments to improve connections where feasible.

The public feedback portion of the launch is now closed, but the city says customers will have the opportunity to provide more feedback in the weeks following the full service launch.

Riders are reminded there are still COVID-19 measures in place on Transit buses. Masks are now mandatory on all buses, and The City encourages all riders to follow AHS guidelines to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
