Minister rules out cuts to AISH payments

Alberta’s social services minister is denying newspaper claims that the United Conservative government is considering cuts to Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped payments.

Rajan Sawhney posted to Facebook on Saturday that there will be no cuts to AISH financial benefits, and that a review would be focused on service delivery.

Approximately 70,000 Albertans who are permanently unable to work due to medical conditions receive about $1,600 per month under the program.

Alberta’s Opposition notes the government’s decision to halt indexing of the program last year has already clawed back benefits.

“It is almost impossible to put into words the degree of fear and anxiety this government is adding to children and adults with disabilities and their families over and above having to struggle with the overwhelming impact of COVID-19,” said Barb MacIntyre, President of Inclusion Alberta.

“Government announcements of possible cuts to AISH added to cuts to school support staff and the increasing lack of supports for children and adults with developmental disabilities, has resulted in families feeling forgotten and abandoned.”
