Charges laid after farmer shot at near Drayton Valley

A person is in custody after an incident in which shots were fired at a farmer’s vehicle.

RCMP in Breton and Thorsby say it was 10 p.m. on Sept. 8 when they responded to a 9-1-1 call on Range Road 63 at Township Road 474, about 30 km southeast of Drayton Valley.

Investigation led RCMP to believe that a suspect male had gotten out of his truck and fired a gun at another male’s vehicle. The farmer who had apparently been shot at fled in his vehicle and called 9-1-1. The farmer was not injured.

Neighbourhood enquiries led RCMP to locate the suspect truck and identify the male suspect as Gavin Gregory Annett, 41, who lived nearby.

On Sept. 10, Annett was arrested without incident, with assistance from the RCMP Emergency Response Team. A search warrant was executed at his property, and then charges were laid.

He now faces nine criminal charges, including point a firearm, assault with a weapon, and fail to comply with a release order.

“During the course of this investigation, prior offences were revealed relating to a different male victim,” an RCMP media release states. “These offences were alleged to have occurred in Brazeau County on August 5. Annett is facing an addition nine criminal charges including point a firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited, uttering threats, extortion with a firearm, et al.”

Annett did not speak to bail and remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear at the Leduc Provincial Courthouse on Sept. 17.

The investigations into these incidents remain ongoing.
