Dr. Deena Hinshaw says Alberta has released a map that shows which schools in the province have had cases of COVID-19.
HINSHAW SHARES DAILY UPDATE

Alberta launchs map showing schools with COVID-19

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health says that while there is information circulating that identifies more schools with cases of COVID-19, the province’s threshold records only those who attended while there was a risk of spreading.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw also stressed the cases at Alberta schools have been identified as being acquired in the community, “not through transmission from the schools themselves.”

Hinshaw said during her daily update on Wednesday that including those connected to the schools but who hadn’t attended while infectious, provides no benefit to the public.

But in an effort to reassure parents, Hinshaw announced the province has released an online map showing the current status of COVID-19 in K-12 schools across Alberta.

“The map will list every school where there have been two or more cases in a school setting within a 14 day period where disease could have been acquired or transmitted in the school. So far, none of the 16 schools that AHS has reported to us have met that threshold,” HInshaw explained.

In a message to parents, Hinshaw said she understands the stresses and that, “this anxiety is natural.”

However, she added, there is still much about the virus that is unknown and “there is no perfect path” in dealing with it.

Alberta is reporting an additional 98 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday to bring the overall total to 15,191.

The province completed 10,500 tests for the virus on Tuesday.

Alberta has 1,585 active cases, a decrease of 107 from Tuesday’s report.

There are currently 45 Albertans in hospital because of the virus, including seven who are in intensive care.

One new fatality is being attributed to the virus, a woman in her 70s from the Edmonton zone, bringing Alberta’s death toll from COVID-19 to 248.

In the Central Zone the number of active cases sits at 48, down four from 52 on Tuesday, while recoveries are up to 573, an increase of three.
