“Friend-Raiser”

Central Alberta Wingfest encourages supporting local this month

Sep 3, 2020 | 11:09 AM

The Rotary Club of Red Deer – Urban Spirits is continuing their annual Central Alberta WingFest in 2020, with a unique twist as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is an opportunity for us to give back to the businesses who have supported us for the past seven years,” says Brenda Sargeant, co-chair of the Central Alberta WingFest committee. “We’re always blown away by how our local businesses take on this event and really make it something special.”

Where normally the event would raise money for the club to support community and international initiatives, this year’s “Friend-Raiser” is focused on supporting local restaurants by encouraging central Albertans to order chicken wings (either in person or via takeout) throughout the month of September.

Wing lovers can visit a number of establishments on Wing Wednesdays, and then go online to vote for their favourite wings across three categories – Creatively Inspired Flavour, Signature Recipe and Heat to Beat. The restaurant with the highest number of points tallied at the end of the month will also earn the coveted “People’s Choice” award.

Participating establishments include:

● Cilantro and Chive (Lacombe)

● East 40th Pub (Red Deer)

● The Hideout Eats & Beats (Gasoline Alley)

● Hockey Central Sports Lounge (Sylvan Lake)

● Memphis Blues (Red Deer)

● Moe’s Pizza Co. (Lacombe)

● One Eleven Grill (Red Deer)

● Open Range Saloon (Sylvan Lake)

● Ugly’s Pub & Grill (Lacombe)

The winning wings will be announced at the beginning of October via the Rotary Club of Red Deer Urban Spirits Facebook page.
