Ponoka man facing 36 charges after evading police

A 32-year-old male from Ponoka is in custody and facing 36 charges after an incident last Wednesday.

RCMP say it was about 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 25 when they received a call about a sighting of a stolen pick-up truck in Ponoka County. RCMP support units from Bashaw, Ponoka, Wetaskiwin and Maskwacis detachments all responded to try and locate the vehicle.

RCMP were then notified that the driver of the vehicle had apparently stolen a firearm and wallet from an unlocked vehicle in Camrose County. Additional resources were deployed to assist, including RCMP Air Services and Police Dog Services.

Police say the suspect travelled through several jurisdictions, abandoning the original stolen truck and stealing several other unlocked pick-ups, which had been left with keys in the ignition.

As a result of the escalating risk of the suspect’s driving pattern and high speeds, the suspect temporarily eluded members. And with the passing time, RCMP Air Services required refueling, thus lost sight of the suspect. Efforts that day were unsuccessful in relocating the suspect.

On Aug. 26, according to Mounties, a search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence at around 8 p.m.

Cody Alan Feil’s alleged 36 criminal code offences are related to criminal flight from police and Traffic Safety Act charges. Feil was also wanted on five outstanding warrants of arrest from various jurisdictions.

He remains in custody and will appear in Wetaskiwin Provincial Court on Sept. 8.

“The Bashaw RCMP are aware of the increased activity during our important harvest time but please remain vigilant and remove keys from vehicles and secure your property to prevent incidents of theft,” says Bashaw Detachment Commander Sergeant Bruce Holliday. “Together we can make a difference in crime prevention in our rural communities!”

RCMP say in the process of this investigation, they recovered nine stolen vehicles involved in the incident.

In September 2018, Feil was sentenced to eight months in jail and given a three-year driving ban after being convicted in connection to an incident in Red Deer that June in which he rammed a stolen truck into a police cruiser.
