The Mustard Seed in Red Deer will benefit from thousands of dollars raised this weekend through the first ever Amazing (Car) Race.

The event took place Saturday, with 20 teams departing the Westerner Park parking lot for various pit stops around the city.

Scott Tilbury, Fund Development Officer for The Mustard Seed Red Deer shares that all money raised will support health and wellness advocacy on behalf of the guests who attend The Seed.

“Our advocates are committed to helping people transition toward and maintaining a sustainable and healthy lifestyle,” Tilbury says. “Advocates help guests find a job, housing, mental health counselling, and even transportation to go see a specialist.”

Tilbury says the organization’s biggest challenge is volunteers, particularly when it comes to helping with meal service. If you can, he asks, contact The Mustard Seed to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

That said, there was no shortage of volunteers for the Amazing (Car) Race on Saturday, including at Culligan Red Deer on the city’s north end.

There, racers had to hand label bottles of water with custom Mustard Seed logos and then sell several bottles for a buck apiece to strangers before they finish the race.

Culligan owner Jacquie Carramusa explained why they said yes to being a partner of the event.

“During COVID, we’ve started donating water to The Mustard Seed to help them out, she said. “We strongly believe in community; myself and my business partner both grew up in Red Deer, so especially through COVID, we believe in supporting local charities. Plus, it’s a really fun event.”

Other partners of the event include BIG 105.5 and 106.7 The Drive radio stations, Steve’s Livestock Transport, Olymel, Messinger Meats, Red Deer Sewing Centre, Mud, Sweat and Gears, Sweet Capone’s, and Castle Wolf Creek Building Supplies.

The Mustard Seed says the event raised more than $17,000. For more information, visit www.theseed.ca.
