Man stuck in vent on top of École Mountview arrested by RCMP

Charges are pending against two men after a police incident in Red Deer’s Mountview neighbourhood on Saturday.

Cpl. Deanna Fontaine with Alberta RCMP Media Relations says it was approximately 12:45 p.m. when a member from Red Deer observed a vehicle with a stolen license plate. The male driver was known to police.

Members followed the vehicle, which then accelerated and fled. Due to public safety concerns, it was not pursued.

A short time later, RCMP queried a license plate that did not match the pick-up truck it was on. The truck was located in a back alley in the Mountview area.

A member approached that vehicle and arrested a 23-year old male from Red Deer without incident. The male was the driver previously seen in the car. Meantime, a second male in the truck, a 28-year-old from Red Deer, was detained but then fled on foot.

Police chased after the man on foot, but could not locate him before he climbed onto the roof of École Mountview School.

Police Dog Services were called in and the school, including the area around it, were contained by RCMP. Two employees inside the school were evacuated, Fontaine says.

While waiting for the canine unit, the male on the roof attempted to break into the school through a vent on the roof. The male then became stuck, eventually surrendered to police, and was arrested.

The older male sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries which required emergency treatment at the hospital.

The younger male remains in police custody, and charges are pending against both.
