Controlled burn

Controlled burn planned as Rocky Forest Area wildfire danger set to ‘very high’

Aug 20, 2020 | 10:02 AM

With the dry and near-record breaking temperatures that gripped central Alberta over the past few days the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is now under a Fire Advisory, and as of Wednesday the area has been declared to be at a very high risk for wildfires.

To take advantage of these conditions local firefighters will be conducting prescribed burning in the Chungo Gap area northwest of Nordegg, the reason being to reduce the potential for future unwanted wildfires that could danger local communities and other valuable areas such as timber allotments.

Locals and visitors are being warned that they will notice helicopters, firetrucks, fire crews, and at times smoke and open flames and should keep a respectful distance at all times.

The area will be closed to the public with hikers being able to continue to enjoy the area again August 22.
