alberta crop report

Three per cent of Central region crops in the bin

Aug 15, 2020 | 4:07 PM

The latest Alberta Crop Report for August 11 (released August 14), notes a wide variety of weather affected crops across the province this past week.

Warmer temperatures and temps closer to normal were the norm for some areas, while hail caused varying degrees of damage elsewhere.

The report says spring-seeded cereals across the province are mostly at the end of the milk development growth stage, or less than a week behind normal.

About 95 per cent of canola in the Southern, North East and North West regions are in the podding stage, while the Central and Peace regions have 31 and 15 per cent, respectively, still in flower.

About two per cent of all crops in the Southern and three per cent in Central are now in the bin, it says.

The report also states that 77 per cent of crops in Alberta are in good or excellent condition, comparatively better than the 5-year average of 59 per cent.

For the Central region, which includes Rimbey, Airdrie, Coronation and Oyen, hot temperatures contributed to filling crops.

On top of the three per cent in the bin, another three is swathed.

About 31 per cent of winter wheat, 26 per cent of fall rye, and two per cent of dry peas and mustard have been combined.

Meanwhile, producers are at 84 per cent for the first cut of hay.
