Rocky town council to discuss making masks mandatory in all indoor public spaces

At their next meeting on Tuesday, Rocky Mountain House town council will begin discussions on whether to make face masks mandatory within all public indoor spaces to help prevent spread of COVID-19.

It was at the tail end of their August 4 meeting that Councillor Jason Alderson put forward a notice of motion on the issue.

On Wednesday, August 12, Alderson posted on social media asking residents, “Wherever you stand on the issue, make your voice heard.”

So far the replies to the post have been overwhelmingly one-sided against mandatory masks, with some saying they were so opposed to it that they would refuse to shop local if it were to go forward.

Alderson said during the August 4 meeting that he wanted to at least discuss the “hot topic” issue of whether the town should just do it themselves or possibly wait for AHS to make it mandatory.

CAO Dean Krause noted that administration would come forward with options for the August 18 meeting which has not been released at this time.

Several municipalities across the province including Calgary, Edmonton and Jasper have passed some form of temporary bylaw mandating the wearing of masks in public spaces.
