Ponoka RCMP lay charges following carjacking

Aug 12, 2020 | 2:38 PM

One suspect is in custody with another one still on the loose following a carjacking in Ponoka last weekend.

It was just after midnight on Saturday, Aug. 8 when Ponoka RCMP responded to a 911 call that unknown suspects had just stolen a car from four people who were getting gas.

While stopped to get gas, Mounties say another car was at the station and two males exited that car. One of the suspects presented what was believed to be a shotgun and demanded the victim’s car. Before driving away, the suspect hit one of the victims, causing minor injury.

Police say the two male suspects in the stolen car then fled towards Maskwacis. The original car that the suspects arrived in also left the gas station, northbound on Highway 2A.

At approximately 1:00 a.m., Maskwacis RCMP located the stolen vehicle which failed to stop for RCMP. A brief pursuit ensued and the vehicle lost control – crashing into the ditch at the corner of Bobtail Road and Highway 2A.

One male was immediately arrested while the second male suspect fled on foot along some nearby train tracks. Police Dog Services was deployed, however, he was not located.

Ray Wyles Buffalo, 24, of Maskwacis is charged with robbery with a firearm, flight from police, unauthorized possession of a firearm and using a firearm in the commission of an offence.

Buffalo has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Ponoka Provincial Court on Sept. 18.

Mounties note, the investigation into the identities of the other people involved in this incident continues.
