This month, global firm INEOS’ JOFFRE LAO site near Red Deer has donated $15,000 to a not-for-profit charity, The Good Samaritan Society, through the international INEOS Community Fund. This grant will support the vital work of the organisation as it makes changes to its care homes to meet social distancing and health and safety requirements in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Good Samaritan Society is a well-known, not-for-profit organisation which currently supports over 6000 people across 21 care centres in Alberta and 8 British Columbia. Set up in 1949, the charity exists to provide quality accommodations, health, and community care services and programs to people in need.

The grant will be used to fund the charity’s vital work as it finds new ways of operating its service in the current climate. To support the charity’s residents, the grant will address the critical need for infection prevention items, including isolation carts and over the bed tables. The purchase of these items will provide the necessary social-distanced space for the residents to eat their meals and receive essential care and support from care home employees.

Michelle Bonnici, Interim President and CEO at The Good Samaritan Society says, “We are thankful to have received this support from the INEOS Community Fund. It has come at a pivotal moment as we work to enhance our services to ensure that we are well equipped to support the needs of residents throughout this pandemic.”

Kiza Trentham, Site Manager at Good Samaritan Clearwater Centre says, “These tables have made it easier for residents to physically distance during meals and activities such as bingo or hand bells – they are extremely useful for multiple purposes! Over-bed tables also make it easier for residents to access drinks from their bed during the night, and to ensure a comfortable table height when eating in their rooms should they require precautions/self-isolation.

The £1m INEOS Community Fund was established by INEOS Chairman, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, in March 2020 in tandem with the company’s COVID-19 “Hands On” campaign, which set up new production lines to provide millions of bottles of free hand sanitiser each month to hospitals and frontline healthcare.

The Community fund enables INEOS sites across the world to support the charitable organisations doing vital work in their local communities at this particularly difficult time.

John Mulgrew, Human Resources SHE Manager at INEOS Joffre LAO site says, “We were delighted to be able to help the fantastic work of The Good Samaritan Society as its care homes adapt in these extremely challenging times. New infection prevention equipment will allow them to continue their brilliant work in providing for the elderly in our communities. “
