Aug 7, 2020 | 8:20 AM

The local jobless rate continues trending in the wrong direction.

July’s numbers show the unemployment rate for the Red Deer region reached 14%.

That’s up from 13.4% in June and nearly double from 7.4% in July 2019.

Contrarily, Alberta’s jobless rate took a positive step in going from 15.5% in June to 12.8% last month. This rate was the second highest in Canada, behind Newfoundland and Labrador’s 15.6%.

The province’s jobless rate in July 2019 was 7.0%.

Nationally, this morning’s jobs report was slightly better than economists had predicted as the economy added 419,000 jobs last month and the jobless rate fell to 10.9%, down from 12.3 in June.

Economists had forecast a gain of 400,000 jobs and for the unemployment rate to fall to 11%.

Most employment gains in July were in part-time work, which increased to the tune of 345,000 positions.

Full-time positions across Canada increased by 73,000 last month.
