3rd Annual Sylvan Lake Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Aug 7, 2020 | 7:06 AM

Put Yourself in Her Shoes.

The Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake presents the 3rd Annual Sylvan Lake Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 3 p.m.

Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families are joining the award winning Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. A Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event is a playful opportunity for people to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediation to gender based violence.

There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks people to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. We have 200 pairs of shoes to fill, up to men’s size 15! It’s not easy walking in these shoes, but it’s fun and it gets the community to talk about something that’s really difficult to talk about: gender relations and sexual violence.

How the fundraiser works: Participants sign up to collect pledges from those who would like to see them don a pair of stiletto heels and try to make the mile. This event is for everyone! We encourage anyone and everyone to collect pledges, either alone or in teams, and join in on event day to support the brave ‘soles’ who are willing the wear the heels and walk the walk.

Our Mission: To stand up against violence and show others that we are taking a stand, walking with those who face violence and being their voice with each step we take.

The Central Alberta Women’s Outreach (The Outreach Centre) is a non-profit agency that relies on its fundraising efforts, sponsors and major donors for financial support. The funds generated from this event will go toward supporting over 16 programs and services, offered by The Outreach Centre, to assist families who have chosen to pursue a safer, healthier and more secure life for themselves and their families.

Outreach Workers assist individuals on issues concerning domestic violence, housing, legal, emotional support, and meeting basic needs. The Outreach Centre coordinates the Tools for School Program by distributing backpacks to help children return to school with appropriate supplies, as well as the Adopt a Family Program which assists less fortunate single parents who are unable to provide a Christmas for their children. We would not be able to provide these programs if it was not for the generosity and support of the community.

This event was successfully spearheaded by the HJ Cody Interact Club (sponsored by the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club) in its first two year and the club will still be involved this year under the supervision of the Rotary Club instead of the high school, due to COVID 19 restrictions.
