Still hoping for full season

WHL pushes start of 2020-21 season to December

The Western Hockey League says it now hopes to open its 2020-21 regular season on Friday, December 4.

The league had previously set October 2 as its start date.

The WHL is still planning to play a full regular season schedule of 68 games, followed by four rounds of playoffs during the 2020-21 season.

In a release the league says the opening date of the regular season remains contingent on receiving the necessary approvals from the government and health authorities in each of the six provincial / state jurisdictions in WHL territory (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C., Washington and Oregon).

“In our discussions with the government and health authorities, it has become apparent that additional time is required to ensure we can return to play in a safe and responsible manner,” stated WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “Our WHL health and safety protocols have been well received by the health authorities but we have several key issues that we will need to reach a resolution on in the coming months.”

The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) has announced Dec. 1 as its season start date. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) is expected to make a similar announcement soon.

The 2021 Memorial Cup is currently scheduled to be played from June 17-27, hosted by either the Oshawa Generals or Soo Greyhounds.
