Lower speed limit in Creekside being tried for six months

The Town of Rocky Mountain House will be conducting a six-month speed limit reduction pilot project in Creekside.

Beginning Sept. 1, the speed limit in the Creekside subdivision will be reduced to 40 km/h from 50 km/h.

Town officials say the Creekside Speed Limit Reduction Pilot Project will be monitored by Protective Services and electronic radar.

The pilot project includes the following roads: 43 Avenue Close, 44 Avenue, 45 Avenue, 45 Avenue Close, 47 Avenue (Park Avenue), 54 Street, 58 Street Close, 59 Street and 59 Street Close.

Reasons cited by Town staff for reducing residential speed limits include safety of children, pedestrians and motorists, concerns from residents, the fact that lower speed limits result in less serious injuries and that varying speed zones in town cause confusion.

Residents will be asked for feedback during the last two months of the pilot project, with the Town saying the information will help council determine if a 40 km/h speed limit should be implemented in all residential neighbourhoods in Rocky Mountain House.
