Dr. Hinshaw asks Albertans to get a mask this weekend as numbers drop slightly

Aug 6, 2020 | 4:26 PM

Active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta have decreased from 1,146 to 1,107 since Wednesday.

The province counted 56 new cases today, bringing the provincial total to 11,296. A total of 9,984 Albertans have recovered from the coronavirus.

Red Deer remains at 10 active cases, though recoveries climbed one to 50. Active cases are also down in Central Zone from 193 to 186, however deaths rose by one to five after a woman in her 80s passed away (see detailed regional data below).

There are currently 76 people in hospital and 19 in ICU. The provincial death toll rose by two on Thursday to 205.

“This weekend, I am asking all Albertans to make one small change in their lives. If you don’t have a mask, please get one. If you haven’t instructed your kids on how to wear masks safely, take time to do that,” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, during a video press conference.

“If going out to eat, shop or be in close contact with others, make sure you’re feeling well, wash your hands and carry hand sanitizer. We are going to be living with this virus for some time.”

Hinshaw spoke too about vaccines, and growing optimism that there may be one on the horizon.

“There are a number being tested around the world that show promise and I hope that a safe and effective one is identified as soon as possible, however the focus on a vaccine can sometimes give a false confidence that the end of COVID-19 is just around the corner,” she said. “It can make us think that if we resist changing our personal behaviour for just a few more months, a vaccine will arrive and we won’t need to worry about modifying how we act.”

Hinshaw added that even if a vaccine is developed, there’s no way to know for sure when it will be available here or how many doses one individual will need to receive.

“The hard truth is that we will likely still be fighting COVID-19 in 2021, so we do need to build good daily habits now.”

She noted that the province is reducing the time it takes to receive a test and get results.
