Another crash at busy intersection slated for upgrades

Fortunately, there were no injuries after a three-vehicle crash at a busy central Alberta intersection Friday afternoon.

Penhold Fire Chief Jim Pendergast says emergency personnel responded to the collision just after 4 p.m. at Hwy 42 and Hwy 2A.

There was heavy to moderate damage to each of the vehicles, and traffic was blocked northbound on 2A, as well as eastbound on 42.

“It being late afternoon on Friday of a long weekend, there was a very high volume of traffic and we had traffic blocked in two directions, so scene safety was a priority,“ says Pendergast. “We respond to this intersection several times a year and are hoping for some improvement in the near future.”

In May, rdnewsNOW reported that Alberta Transportation has set the wheels in motion for upgrades at that intersection.

The Town said that provincial officials have indicated a roundabout or traffic circle would best serve the crossing. Mayor Mike Yargeau says the costs would fall on Alberta Transportation.

“As far as Penhold is concerned, we know that intersection is a high traffic and very congested one, especially on long weekends,” Yargeau says. “We would support Alberta Transportation making upgrades as soon as they can.”

The fire department says the latest crash is evidence that everyone would benefit if drivers took a little extra time to get where they’re going this weekend.
