Fecal bacteria found in Gull Lake, advisory issued

Jul 31, 2020 | 8:41 PM

Alberta Health Services has issued a water quality advisory for both Gull Lake at Aspen Beach and Buffalo Lake at Rochon Sands.

The health authority says there are elevated levels of fecal bacteria currently present in the water, which is regularly tested.

AHS says visitors should not wade or swim in either location, effective immediately. Doing so may put one at risk for gastrointestinal illness and possible infections of the skin, ears and eyes. Water-borne organisms can also cause vomiting and diarrhea.

“If members of the public do decide to access the water at Aspen Beach, they should take precautions to protect themselves. Avoid contact with the face/mouth and ensure hands are washed after being in the water,” a release states.

“Hand washing can also help protect against skin, ear and eye infections.”

Visitors are also reminded to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any river, lake or reservoir.

AHS Environmental Public Health officers will continue to monitor the water of Gull Lake at Aspen Beach and signage has been posted at common beach access points.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

Note: An earlier version of this story noted only the advisory for Gull Lake as the other information about Buffalo Lake had not yet been released.
