Central zone adds 53 active COVID-19 cases, one death

Alberta reported another 127 cases of COVID-19 on Friday to bring the total number to 10,843.

The number of active cases in the province is down to 1,386, from 1,408 on Thursday.

Recoveries are up by 148 to 9,261.

There are 86 people hospitalized in the province because of the virus, a decrease of five from Thursday, including 17 in intensive care, a decrease of one.

The province completed 8,384 COVID-19 tests over the last 24 hours.

The Central Zone saw a sharp rise in the number of active COVID-19 cases from 201 on Thursday to 254 Friday. Recoveries have risen by 13 to 208.

There are 14 people hospitalized in the zone due to the virus, including five in intensive care.

The Central Zone also recorded its second death from the virus since the onset of the pandemic. Alberta’s death toll from COVID-19 now sits at 196.

The largest spike in the zone was in Starland County where the number of active cases shot up from nine on Thursday to 63 on Friday.

In Red Deer, there are two more active COVID-19 cases for a total of 10. The number of recoveries in the city remains listed at 47.

There are now 23 active cases in Stettler County (decrease of one), six in Red Deer County (decrease of one), four in Sylvan Lake (decrease of one), eight in Lacombe County, one in the city of Lacombe, two in Ponoka County (decrease of one), two in Rocky Mountain House, one in Sundre, one in Mountain View County, five in Kneehill County (decrease of two), and 10 in the County of Paintearth.

Alberta Health spokesperson Tom McMillan confirmed to rdnewsNOW that outbreaks at Red Deer Regional Hospital and Waskasoo Kiwanis Towers remain steady at three and two active cases, respectively. Those figures have remained the same since Monday after the outbreaks were declared July 24.
