Mountain Rose Centre once again accepting donations

Jul 30, 2020 | 8:53 AM

The Mountain Rose Centre is once again accepting donations and is welcoming them with open arms.

However COVID-19 has changed how that will be done.

Anyone wishing to drop off their charitable contribution can now only do so every Thursday beginning July 30.

The items will be kept in a locked shed outside of the building for 3 days as that is what they have been told is the period they must wait before bringing them inside for cleaning.

They ask that you call ahead so that it can allow someone time to meet you outside and can help spread out arrivals to help maintain social distancing.

“We’re certainly glad we can accept donations again because it’s been very difficult on a budget,” Executive Director Cindy Easton had mentioned.

She had noted that before March they were happy to have a full pantry in the shelter, but ever since the current health crises, it has become far more barren.

Mountain Rose will be accepting all donations, but in particular require pantry items like pasta, canned goods, etc.

“What we also need is laundry detergent and bounce sheets,” Easton said, speaking of the large volume of extra washing they now do due to COVID-19.

“Cash donations are always welcome as well of course,” since they have also been forced to cancel multiple fund raising events.

She was happy to say that some financial aid had been coming in on the provincial and federal level, “We’ve been very fortunate as a woman shelter since we are deemed an essential service. So even though we had to scale back our services to follow the protocols for covid-19, we did remain open.”

The women’s shelter has been and is currently at full capacity in their 21 bed shelter and 5 second stage apartments.

Due to their current layout they did have to close 6 beds in the emergency shelter, so it is now at 15 beds since some did not meet the 6 feet distance requirements.

Easton also commented on their name The Mountain Rose Centre, “Our organizational name will always remain The Mount Rose Women’s Shelter Association, but we do so much work with men and with families and we also work with people that are homeless, so we changed our name to Mountain Rose Centre so that people know that there’s much more happening here.”

The Mountain Rose Centre will be accepting donations every Thursday in this fashion until the end of the current health crisis.
