Clearwater County has completed their backbone plan for the new 2020-2025 broadband project to bring high-speed internet to its residents.

Council voted in favour to bring forward the broad plan to the public on July 28, and now administration will begin its communications and public engagement before the topic comes back to council on August 25.

The proposed project indicates possible connections through adjacent municipalities and alternate routes to Calgary and/or Edmonton.

The hope isx that through the interconnections it will reduce costs for the County which in turn they hope will pass on to subscribers.

In 2017, the county did a survey that showed an average cost of internet was $76.75/month and that nearly half had to spend an average of $400 on additional infrastructure for their internet.

The proposed project has plans to provide internet for roughly 80% of county residents.

10 LTE wireless technology towers would be set up along harder to reach and larger areas throughout the County instead of direct fibre connectivity.

These towers also would have the capability to provide high speed internet to long term campers and more remotely located homes and businesses.
