Evansburg RCMP encourage planning before tubing on Pembina River

With the arrival of fantastic weather and the upcoming August long weekend, Evansburg RCMP are issuing a public safety warning about tubing on the Pembina River. DISEMBARK AT THE PROVINCIAL PARK!

This past weekend, Evansburg Mounties responded to a couple of calls to service about overdue tubers who missed exiting the river at the Provincial Park. Police say a response by RCMP to save stranded tubers ties up resources that may be needed for a high priority call elsewhere.

Mounties point out that the Pembina River does not run in a circle or loop back, so if you’re planning on tubing on the river, do not enter at the Provincial Park Campgrounds.

RCMP say The Park is where you MUST exit the river. If you float past the park, you will be stranded.

According to police, you will not be able to exit until approximately reaching Sangudo, which is an 8-hour float.

Visitors and residents of the area wishing to tube the Pembina River are reminded to take extra steps and be prepared for their journey as follows:

• Wear a life jacket.
• Know the area, review maps and plan for the length of your journey.
• Notify a responsible person where you are going, who you are with, and the route you plan on taking.
• Dress appropriately for the weather, including the use of a wet suit when necessary. Remember sunscreen, water supplies and bug spray.
• Do not consume alcohol prior to, or during tubing.
• Bring a charged cell phone and store it properly.

Evansburg RCMP encourage people to enjoy the Pembina River, but ask that they do so responsibly.
